Campus Location

The University of Canterbury is a New Zealand public research university located in Christchurch. It is the country's second-oldest university. 

The engineering and science programs at the institution are globally ranked in the top 10. Degrees in Arts, Commerce, Education (physical education), Fine Arts, Forestry, Health Sciences, Law, Criminal Justice, Antarctic Studies, Music, Social Work, Speech and Language Pathology, Sports Coaching, and Teaching are also available at the institution.

The institution has a prominent alumni list that includes well-known authors, artists, professors, and politicians, among others. Ernest Rutherford, a physicist who discovered the atomic structure and is renowned as the Father of Nuclear Physics, was one of the University of Canterbury's noble laureates.

The University of Canterbury entices overseas students to study in 150 different subject areas at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels. In addition, at the institution, students can pursue certificates, diplomas, and Certificates of Competency programs. The institution is in the top 1% of all universities worldwide, with 15 courses ranking in the top 200.

Intake Dates

Admissions to the University of Canterbury are open for two intakes each year, in February and July. 

 

The application deadline for Semester 1 is October 31, while the cutoff date for Semester 2 is April 30. The deadline for postgraduate thesis applications is six months before the program's commencement date.

Country specific requirement

At least three GCE 'A' levels pass, with at least one at grade C or above (not including General Studies)

Undergraduate students who do not fulfill the entry requirements can get admission to the first year of their University of Canterbury undergraduate degree through the UC International College Foundation Studies Certificate program. Over the course of two semesters, students will take eight courses. Courses are precisely chosen based on a student's desired program of study at the University of Canterbury.

English proficieny requirement

  • Overall, 80 IBT with a writing score of a minimum 19 for listening, reading, and writing or 550 PBT and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5 (for undergraduates); Overall, 90 IBT with a writing score of minimum 19 for listening, reading, and writing or 575 PBT and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5 (for postgraduates)

  • IELTS: 6.0, with no band below 5.5 (for undergraduates); 6.5, with no band below 6.0 (for postgraduates)

  • Pearson PTE: Overall 50 with no PTE communicative score below 42 (for undergraduates); Overall 58 with no PTE communicative score below 50 (for postgraduates)

 

You must complete the English language requirements all at once. The English Language exam must have been completed within three years of the anticipated start date of study at the University of Canterbury.

If you do not fulfill the English language requirements, you may enroll in CCEL College of English's English language program. This course is designed to give you with the specialized language and study skills required for academic success. The CCEL EAP2 curriculum is recognized as a non-IELTS university language admission standard for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

The University of Canterbury campus spans 76 hectares in the Christchurch suburb of Ilama.
