Lithuania, a tiny country with a population of roughly 2.8 million people, has been an EU member since 2004 and adopted the Euro as its official currency in 2015. International students can now choose from hundreds of exciting English-taught education alternatives.

Lithuania has more than 30 higher education institutes. The system distinguishes between universities and university colleges, like in Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland, and is commonly referred to as "universities of applied sciences."

For their academic programs, Lithuanian institutions have chosen a Bachelor's / Master's format. The degrees conferred are recognized across Europe and beyond the world. Four Lithuanian institutions are ranked in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017, and three more are ranked in the QS University Rankings: EECA, which ranks the top universities in emerging Europe and Central Asia.

How much does it cost to study in Lithuania?
International students at public Lithuanian colleges pay reasonable tuition. Tuition for Bachelor's degrees, for example, begins at 1,300 EUR per year, 1,000 EUR per year for Master's degrees, and 8,400 EUR per year for Ph.D. degrees.

Medical programs are among the most costly, with tuition exceeding 10,000 EUR a year for some specializations. All students (EU and non-EU/EEA) are eligible to apply for state-funded Ph.D. positions.

Lithuania has a relatively cheap cost of living. Student housing may be obtained for as low as 100 EUR per month. Overall, students may easily get by on a budget of 500 EUR per month or less, including food, books, and leisure activities.

What are the admission criteria for studying in Lithuanian universities?
To study for a bachelor's degree in Lithuania, you must have a Secondary Education Diploma (GCE AL), a School Leaving Certificate, or an equivalent certificate. A bachelor's degree, generally in the same discipline, is required for admission to a master's program.

Is IELTS a requirement for studying in Lithuania?
However, in order to apply for this degree, you must first get a certificate of language competency. If your university does not provide its own English proficiency test, you can take one of the following:

How many hours may an international student work in Lithuania while studying?
During undergraduate studies, 20 hours of labor per week are authorized, as well as three months of full-time work during the vacations.

Students pursuing a master's degree can now work full-time. Previously, they could only work 20 hours a week, and only Ph.D. students could work more. This opens up new opportunities for graduate students, who may now combine a part-time (or full-time) Master's degree with a full-time employment to obtain the best of both worlds.

How long does a post-study work visa in Lithuania last?
A student who wishes to remain in Lithuania after completing his Bachelor's/Master's/PhD studies may apply for a temporary residency visa for the purpose of job hunting. This visa will allow the student to stay in Lithuania for a year after graduation and begin working as soon as he or she finds a job.
